It will no doubt play a vital military role well into the 21st century, and this is the definitive book on its history, development and technology.

The propaganda view of the German Army as being the first modern army fully equipped for war in 1939 is far from historically accurate. The Treaty of Versailles left Germany weak and unable to produce more than token weapons. Germany entered WWII using a variety of obsolete and captured weapons. These, and the more advanced guns that followed, are described in detail and fully illustrated here by noted historian Terry Gander. Includes all types of field and heavy artillery, coastal guns and anti-aircraft guns.

THE GATLING GUN NOTEBOOK A Collection of Data and Illustrations
James B. Hughes
All most everyone recognises a GATLING GUN today...but when the science of "machine guns" was in its infancy, each improvement in design or firepower was hailed in the press. These news reports were usually illustrated with line drawings...and these 100-plus-year-old drawings make up the body of this notebook on the Gatling Gun, from 1863 when it first appeared, to 1917, when the last U.S. government manual was printed for the Gatling. Ten makers in five countries are covered, as are the Gatling Guns that 29 countries tested or used in some 25 different calibres. Carriages, feed devices, cartridges, manuals and implements are also described or pictured herein. Sales, inspectors and issues, some by serial number, are detailed for many purchases. For the technically minded, extracts from relevant United States patents are included. Listings of all Richard Jordan Gatling's American patents and those patents that "improved" upon his designs are also included.

BROWNING MACHINE GUN CALIBER .50 HB, M2
FM 23-65
a U.S. Army Manual
What makes a heavy machine gun designed and developed in the latter days of World War I still relevant to modern militaries? Reliability, durability and longevity, coupled with a hard-hitting, accurate .50-calibre cartridge designed specifically for this machine gun from the .30-06 cartridge - one of the most successful, versatile and popular rifle cartridges ever. developed.
In 1918, as the German military developed thicker armor plate to withstand hits from American rifle cartridges, American firearms genius John Moses Browning was tasked with designing a heavy machine gun to fire a new .50-caliber cartridge capable of penetrating that armour. Browning came up with his famous .50-caliber M2 heavy machine gun, known affectionately to doughboys, GIs, grunts, aircrews, sailors and devil dogs as "Ma Deuce."
This latest edition of the U.S. Army FM 23-36 Browning .50-caliber manual includes an extensive foreword that outlines the history and development of the M2 and its use by the military forces of at least 90 countries throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. This is a must-read for anyone interested in the operation and maintenance of this incredible weapon.

The Browning Machine Gun Volume II -Rifle Caliber Brownings Abroad

by Dolf L. Goldsmith
Deluxe First Edition 2006
392 pages, 486 illustrations

This second volume of Dolf Goldsmith's series on Browning machine guns proves beyond doubt that the rifle-caliber Browning was simply the most popular and most-used machine gun ever designed.

In some ways this book is even more engrossing than Volume I, as it describes and illustrates in considerable detail the many variations on the basic Browning which were manufactured and/or used by over twenty countries, in virtually every corner of the world, in both World Wars, in Korea and in Vietnam.

Of particular interest is the focus on the aircraft Browning, beginning in the Interwar years, in Britain and particularly in Belgium, where Dieudonné Saive, John Browning's erstwhile chief assistant, twice increased the rate of fire of the FN Browning aircraft machine gun, first in 1932 to 1,200 rpm and again in 1938 to 1,500 rpm, in order to keep pace with the ever-faster airspeeds of the best new fighters and pursuit aircraft.

It may seem strange to feature an aircraft, even one so famous as the British Spitfire, one of the best all-round fighters of World War II, on the cover of a book about Browning machine guns. However there are really eight Browning machine guns in this picture!

As discussed in Chapter Two of this book, the crucial decision to equip each British fighter with eight Brownings was of no less than monumental importance. On this subject the late Col. George M. Chinn USMC (ret.), the author of the authoritative five-volume series of books titled The Machine Gun, commented decisively,

"Students of warfare are generally in agreement that the most far-reaching single military decision made in the 20th century was when a small group of British officers, shortly before World War II, decided to mount eight caliber .303 Brownings on their Hurricane and Spitfire fighters. This single act undoubtedly brought about a turning point of the war".

The Browning Machine Gun Volume IV - Semper Fi FIFTY!

by Frank Iannamico and Dolf L. Goldsmith
Deluxe First Edition, 2008
448 pages, 510 illustrations

This is the fourth and final volume in Collector Grade's monumental series on the Browning machine gun.

Volume One, subtitled Rifle Caliber Brownings in U.S. Service, published in 2005, covers the invention, development and manufacturing history of all models of rifle caliber Brownings in the United States, and their use by U.S. forces in two World Wars and Korea.

Volume Two, Rifle Caliber Brownings Abroad, published in 2006, covers the offshore production and use of rifle caliber Brownings in 35 other countries.

Volume Three, subtitled Supporting the Rifle Caliber Brownings, contains expert, in depth coverage of an exhaustive number of important technical topics, useful for shooters and collectors alike.

Volume Four covers the same basic topics as the three previous volumes, but from the exclusive standpoint of the .50 caliber Browning, which has been in continuous service longer than any other weapon in the U.S. arsenal, and is still in use today in the inventories of 86 countries worldwide.

2008 marks the 90th anniversary of John Browning's first .50 caliber prototype, which, after a shaky start, came into its own with the introduction of the M2 "universal receiver" in 1933. A total of eight prime contractors - three of them divisions of the General Motors Corporation which had never produced a firearm of any kind before - manufactured nearly two million .50 caliber Brownings, of six basic types, during WWII.

By the late 1970s U.S. Army requirements had exceeded available stocks, and today a number of modern contractors are again producing standard and enhanced versions of the venerable M2 in the U.S., Britain and elsewhere.

The Browning Machine Gun Vol 1 The Browning Machine Gun Vol 1

The Browning Machine Gun Volume 1-Rifle Caliber Brownings in U.S.Service
by Dolf L Goldsmith
Deluxe First Edition, 2005
552 pages, 568 illustrations
This is th first volume of a planned multi-volume series on Browning machine guns, written by an ex-U.S. Army armorer who studied and maintained these guns and has since owned and shot a number of them in civilian life.
This profusely illustrated history covers all models of the U.S. Browning, from the first "gas hammer" Model 1895 and the initial recoil-operated Models of 1901 and 1910, through the adoption and manufacture of the famous water-cooled heavy Model 1917 during World War I and the numerous Interwar experimental tank and aircraft guns, most of which were built up on surplus M1917 receivers.
Tank and cavalry experiments led to the development of the air-cooled M1919A4 infantry gun, while Colt's heavy investment in the Browning system paid off handsomely in the lightweight, fast-firing, dual-feed M2 aircraft machine gun, which was sold commercially and made in large numbers during World War II.
Existing stocks of the M1917 water-cooled gun were meanwhile retrofitted to the improved M1917A specification, and the failed Ordnance Department light machine gun competition, discussed in detail, resulted in the compromise M1916A6.
The history of Browning manufacture by Rock Island Arsenal, Saginaw Steering Gear and other contractors is followed by chapters recounting the heroic use of the Browning in WWII and Korea, and all subsequent variations, such as the M1919A4E1, the T151, T152, T153 and M37 tank gun, until these fine guns were phased out after the adoption of the general-purpose M60 in 1957.

War Baby! The U.S. Caliber .30 Carbine. Ruth. War Baby! The U.S. Caliber .30 Carbine. Ruth.

Presented in Collector Grade's usual in-depth fashion, WAR BABY! is the complete story of the design, development and production of all models of the U.S. military carbine, from the inception of the program in 1940 through to its termination at the end of World War II. The carbine is the most popular military shoulder arm in American history. The carbine program was a major achievement in many ways. First of all "nothing succeeds like success", and over six million U.S. carbines were produced from mid-1942 to mid- 1945, nearly five million of them in 1943-44 alone.

Desperate Measures. Weaver Desperate Measures. Weaver

This is the first in-depth study of the amazing series of events which took place during the last chaotic months of Adolf Hitler's "Thousand Year Reich".
The war was already lost for Germany before the idea of a "People's Army" gained any sanction. The six million old men and boys of the Volkssturm were initially equipped with shotguns, drillings, hunting rifles, military training rifles and handguns scrounged from the German populace. These few arms were bolstered by foreign rifles and carbines captured during Germany's early wartime advances, and many collectors and historians may be surprised to learn that the rifle issued in the greatest numbers-the "true Volksgewehr"-was the Italian Carcano, some numbers of which were converted to fire the powerful German 7.92x57mm rifle cartridge!
In addition, seven types of Volksgewehre were specifically designed for manufacture by German industry during the last months of the war. All are covered in detail, and the book includes many previously unpublished photographs of original Volkssturm weapons, including prototypes and rare presentation examples.
Other Volkssturm weapons included the anti-tank Panzerfaust ("tank fist"), a single-shot, rocket-propelled shaped-charge device capable of defeating any Allied tank then in existence, and numerous "clones" of the British Sten machine carbine, which were hastily manufactured by a considerable number of German firms (a memorandum speaks of "30 subcontractors and 14 assembly points"). Programs were also begun to develop special Volkspistolen, made largely from stamped sheet metal.

In summing up, the author notes that even if the Volkssturm had been fully trained, well equipped and armed with the best weapons in the world-which they decidedly were not-they could have done no more than delay the inevitable, which in many cases, documented here, they actually did.

The Schmeisser Myth - German Submachine Guns Through Two World Wars. Helebrant The Schmeisser Myth - German Submachine Guns Through Two World Wars. Helebrant

Of the plethora of submachine guns developed in Germany before 1945, most if not all of which are covered in this book, the most popular by far have been the M.P. 38 and MP 40 series, collectively but erroneously known to all and sundry as “Schmeissers.”
The origins of “the Schmeisser myth” can be traced back to the summer of 1940, when an official British Military Intelligence report described the first captured M.P. 38 as a “Parachute troops machine pistol of the Schmeisser type”, while later that year plans were afoot to produce the “9mm Schmeisser Carbine M.P. 38 Parachute Model” at BSA Guns Ltd. in Birmingham.
The book begins with a brief history of modern warfare and the technological and strategical developments which led to the first “machine guns”, and the adoption during WWI of Infiltration tactics as a means of surmounting the stagnation of trench warfare. The élite German and Austrian Sturmtruppen (storm troopers) were soon clamouring for portable rapid-fire weaponry capable of effective close-range striking power, and a new class of military small arm was the result, beginning with the Italian Villar Perosa. Several early German developments culminated in the adoption of the Bergmann M.P. 18,I in 1918. The new term “submachine gun”, coined in America, soon came to denote any light, portable pistol-calibre automatic weapon of the type called a Maschinenpistole in Germany.
The M.P. 38 was adopted in 1938 and was superseded by a somewhat simpler version called the MP 40 in 1940. The MP 40 was produced in five manufacturing variations by three firms - ERMA, Haenel, and Steyr - until 1944.
Of special interest to advanced collectors will be the four detailed, illustrated accounts of M.P. 38 and MP 40 magazines and loaders, magazine pouches, manuals, and the rare transport and storage chest.
This in-depth technical, tactical and historical treatise on these important and iconic weapons and their makers concludes with a Bibliography and an extensive Index.

The Ultimate Thompson Book. Hill The Ultimate Thompson Book. Hill

Virtually every chapter and topic covered in Tracie Hill's critically acclaimed 1996 Collector Grade title Thompson: The American Legend has been expanded, and some new ones have been added in order to incorporate a vast amount of important new information augmenting every aspect of the history of the Auto Ordnance Corporation, the Thompson family, and the design and production of the hardware that bears the Thompson name. Much of this priceless new material, including personal memoirs, dimensioned blueprints and other rare memorabilia, has been bequeathed by key people who were intimately involved in the day to day operations of the company.
The post WWII history of the Thompson begins with more new documentation concerning the Kilgore Manufacturing Company, historically a manufacturer of cap pistols and pyrotechnics. Kilgore's plans to re-launch the M1A1 Thompson came to naught, and the next incarnation of Auto Ordnance was as part of the Numrich Arms Corporation in West Hurley, New York. Then the story shifts yet again, with up to date coverage of the products of the current proprietors, Kahr Arms.
Chapters on Thompson drum and box magazines are expanded to include original manufacturing drawings and operation detail sheets. Chapters on Web Gear, Other Ancillaries, and Models and Miniatures; then over 100 pages of updated listings of serial numbers of all 15,000 Colt Model 1921 Thompsons, with shipping dates and dispositions where known. Then an impressive display of rare, colorful original paper-handbooks, brochures, price lists, catalogs, and military manuals, both U.S. and foreign.
All this and much, much more-plus ten times more color than The American Legend. Every copy of The Ultimate Thompson Book comes individually shrink wrapped in protective plastic.
