Vintage Guns for the Modern Shot – Diggory Hadoke
There really isn’t much that this book does not cover. Although the title describes the book as being useful for those wanting to own and use older guns, the book goes a lot further than that. Written for the keen shot, but in a style suited equally to the beginner, this is an all-inclusive book on the history guns and shooting.
The book starts with an introduction into collecting guns and the back ground to shooting, including biographies of shooting people past and present. The following section goes onto guns, their features and how to asses them. The final section looks at using your vintage gun in practice. Through the chapters, hardly a stone is left unturned in the process of describing the features, workings and actions of a multitude of guns. It is certainly the most comprehensive book on such features since Burrard’s trilogy. There is simple too much to list here.
In addition to the text, there are many photographs and tables to illustrate the points made. If I had to be fussy, I would say the layout appears odd on some pages, but that is a minor point in comparison to the rest of the book. The author has an extensive knowledge of guns and freely imparts this in a very readable way. For anyone interested in old guns, this is a highly recommended book.
