Description

(T)here is an essential uniformity of armament, organization, tactics and purpose without which individual battalions could not act together effectively. It is this aspect (of the British Infantry) with which Frederick Myatt is most concerned. The English Civil War saw the first formation of a professional standing army in Britain. This book chronicles 300 years of the major campaigns, successes and failures of the British Infantry and also charts the organizational and tactical changes that the Infantry underwent. The Seven Years War, the Peninsular War, the South African War and the two World Wars are described in considerable detail. A recurring theme is the running down of the Infantry after each campaign, often leaving it unable to cope with the demands of an expanding Empire and the threats to its security. The author also highlights the importance of the American War of Independence, the various colonial wars of the nineteenth century and the South African War - wars fought against unconventional enemies and requiring radical changes in tactics and regimental structure. Another important aspect in the Infantry's development was the systematic introduction of its weapons - the bayonet, the flintlock musket, the rifle, the machine gun and the mortar. These changed the shape of the Infantry, eventually producing one of the finest fighting corps in the world.
