The nineteenth-century big game hunters often published accounts of their adventures in pursuit if dangerous game. What they wrote captured not only the excitement of hunting, but also exploration and travel in some of the wildest regions of the world. Their motives were as diverse as the hunters themselves: sometimes a desire for ivory or trophies; sometimes the need to protect the local population from the ravages of a man-eating tiger; perhaps a commission to provide specimens for a museum in Europe or America; often simply a love of adventure. This collection contains writing by some of the best-known hunters and explorers, among them: Frederick Counrteney Selous, an archetypal English hero of Huguenot descent; R. G. Gordon Cummings, who hunted in South Africa in kilt and deerstalker and shot a huge quantity of game; the two great elephant hunters, Neumann and Sutherland; and perhaps the most famous explorer and hunter of them all, Sir Samuel Baker. A section in which some of the hunters write about the rifles and equipment they used will be of particular interest to today’s sportsmen and collectors of antique weapons.
